The LocoMon Challenge
My honest belief is that there is not enough discussion on the subject of Chicanismo, and I will be very blunt! Our identity holds the rich red blood that comes from this continent and it is NOT tied to a language that came across the Atlantic Ocean. Educating people on this is vital because Chicanos must know who they are, why they’re here, and where they are going after they die. I am not calling for blood quantum levels as they do with North American First Nations, that’s a ridiculous thing to do, but that this misnomer, deception, erasure, whatever you want to call it, STOP!
And change is hard, but I recognize that if we are to respect our children by honoring our past we must begin now.
I believe that many on this board hold a high degree of comfort in their social, political and economic sphere, and would prefer that I NOT rock the boat as we are slowly rowed into the horizon of oblivion, the same way anthropologists did for Native Americans. But I’d rather jump out NOW and face the sharks NOW, than face the consequences of inaction when our children ask, “Why didn’t you do something about it?”
And as with racism, some can be on Academic Committees talking about it, some can be out there experiencing it, some can be doing it, but I will always be fighting it, that is my nature. Who will benefit from this fight? Probably the same ones that benefited from Affirmative Action, Equal Rights, desegregation…, where things remain the same, and the ones who benefited from it charge to speak on the subject. We’ve got high-priced help and professional Buffers speaking for us now. Is this enough? Hell no, but for them it is, and that is why they love the Hispanic/Latino
term that’s been placed around their necks. They function as the new scout. Give him or her any trinket, or high-paying job, and they’ll seek you out and fight you to keep things the same.
Porque lavados de la cabeza todos estamos, pero unos mas que otros. Because washed from the brain we all are, but some more than others.
And with that I say, “Well here I am, seek no further, let us use this new medium of war called words, I am ready for you.”
